Jane Addams School for Democracy - Community Reads Program
April 2006

There is a new and exciting program for children and youth at the Jane Addams School for Democracy.  On Monday and Wednesday nights community leaders come to Jane Addams and share a favorite story or book with the children!  Jane Addams School believes that “everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner.” Youth and community members alike share a valued experience of learning and teaching together through the beautiful art of storytelling.

For half an hour, children young and old gather to meet new community members and listen as they share a story, tell about their role in the community, and why they enjoy reading so much. The readers engage the youth and the youth engage the readers in an inspiring way that clearly demonstrates how books and reading bring people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and interests together in a meaningful way.  The children record all the books that have been read to them and that they have read themselves.  Thanks to a First Book Grant, children are rewarded with free

books and new stories to take home.

If you are interested in helping to promote reading in our community and are looking for a fun and interactive way to be involved with the Jane Addams School Children's Circle, please feel free to contact Chenoa Webster at (651) 209-3519 or yako17@hotmail.com to schedule a reading date or to get more information about the program.
