Jane Addams School for Democracy

There is an exciting new program for children and youth at the Jane Addams School for Democracy. Each Monday and Wednesday evening, leaders from the community come and share their favorite stories and books with a group of children and youth who participate in the Jane Addams Children's Circle.

The West Side neighborhood, rich with history and cultural traditions and “community” faculty offers a learning laboratory, yet largely untapped by neighborhood schools. The broad goal of the Teachers’ Institute is to improve learning of children by strengthening the connections between the informal learning resources on the West Side and school curricula. [more]

How do people find satisfying work? How is work understood as civic contribution? What career options are available and how does one choose? The West Side Youth Apprenticeship Project offers hands-on learning for West Side teens to explore these and other important questions. [more]
 
Our work of creating a culture of learning on the West Side is centered around 4 basic principles (leadership development, informal learning opportunities, community capacity and language learnong). The conferences will be an opportunity for West Siders to learn how to apply these principles to help achieve our individual and collective goals. [more]
