All Around the Neighborhood (AATN) is an imaginative, community generated initiative that promotes learning for children and youth while building the capacity of neighborhood adults and community organizations.  AATN invites children to see their neighborhood as a living classroom by providing learning opportunities throughout the year literally "all around the neighborhood."  The learning takes place in summer and school-realease day camps, as well as after-school neighbor camps.  Camps are taught by West Side parents and community members, allowing adults to share their interests and encouraging children to build relationships with caring adults in their neighborhood.

2006 Summer Camps!

This summer, AATN will offer 9 weeks of 1/2 day summer camps for children ages 6-12 who live or attend school on the West Side.  Each week, children will attend a different camp with a unique learning theme.  Some of this summer's themes are:  food sculpture camp, urban camping, and theatre camp.  The same adult group leaders will stay with children through all 9 week-long camps but each week children will have the opportunity to learn from a different community teacher in a new and exciting location in the neighborhood!  How do children get to different camp locations?  Many take the West Side Circulator!  Click on "resources and links" for more information.  To sign your child up for camp, call St. Paul Community Education Youth Programs at 651-325-2672.

West Side Youth Guides

While All Around the Neighborhood summer camps are open to 6-12 year olds, older teens play a very important role!  Teens are welcome to become West Side Youth Guides.  Youth Guides participate in summer camps as mentors to younger children and aids to community teachers!  Call AATN Coordinator Erik Skold at 651-209-3519.

School-release Camps

Throughout the school year, All Around the Neighborhood will be offering fun and educational camps for children when Saint Paul Public Schools are not in session.  AATN will invite 40 children ages 6-12 to join us for exciting learning opportunities during school breaks.  Camps will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm and will be held at different locations throughout the neighborhood.  Call Saint Paul Community Education at 651-325-2672 to register.

Call for Community Teachers

In All Around the Neighborhood we are committed to valuing both professional teachers and non-professional teachers (everyday people with skills to share with our neighborhood's children).  If you have a hobby, passion or interest that would make a good camp theme and are interested in sharing your passion with children, consider joining AATN as a Community Teacher.  Don't worry if you have never done anything like this before, AATN provides a stipend, training and support to all our new and returning Community Teachers.  There are two community teaching options:  lead a week-long camp during our summer session or lead a one-day camp during a school release day.  Call Sheila Wood at 651-292-0382 if you are interested!

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about All Around the Neighborhood, contact Erik Skold at 651-209-3519.  We look forward to learning with you All Around the Neighborhood!
